Some may say that the reason we give is so that our church can fund its bills and finance its God-given ministry. These are certainly both necessary and important. However, for the Christian, giving should be an act of worship. It is an opportunity to give up something that we value—our money—as an offering to God. Through our offerings we express to God our love and devotion in a way that is tangible, simple and sincere. It is not the size of the gift or the benefit to the church that matters most. As we learn from Jesus concerning the widow and her offering in Mark 12:41-44, it is the motivation of the giver that counts most.
The great thing about biblical stewardship is that church offerings are not about raising funds, but opportunities for worship. We are invited to express our heartfelt love and devotion to the God who is so good to us by giving back a portion of what we have received because of His goodness and grace in our lives.
